Public Information Statement

Statement as of 10:48 AM EDT on July 25, 2014

... Rare rainfall event at Lynchburg VA...

Yesterday... July 24 2014... 3.88 inches of rain fell at the
Lynchburg Airport which was the 2nd wettest on record for the
date. It was also the 2nd wettest for any July day since records
began at Lynchburg in 1893. The existing July daily record also
occurred on July 24 and was set back in 1916 when 4.03 inches
fell. In fact... yesterdays rain tied for the 15th wettest day in
all of Lynchburg weather records back to 1893. The wettest single
day was 7.52 inches on August 11 1928.

All of the rain fell in about a 2.5 hour period from 305 PM to
540 PM. In terms of precipitation frequency... this was a fairly
remarkable event. According to the NWS hydrometeorological design
studies center... the 3-hour... 100-year average recurrence
interval rainfall is 3.84 inches for Lynchburg so the event
yesterday was slightly higher than a 100-year recurrence interval
at 3.88 inches and it actually fell in less than 3-hours.

The highest 1-hour amount during the storm was 2.36 inches ending
around 447 PM. The 1-hour... 25-year recurrence interval is 2.33
inches so this was slightly above a 25-year event that for the
1-hour duration.
